Don’t die

New Years resolutions are always tricky business in my life. Everyone makes these great lofty goals and while I would love to do that I stopped a few years back. It’s unrealistic and ends up making everything feel so much worse.

Honestly I got tired of setting myself up for failure with these lofty life changing goals. They are unattainable. My life is too…unstable for lack of a better word. We’re stable, but things get chucked in to chaos often.

My New Years resolutions for the last few years have been as simple as no one close to me dies. While logically I know this is outside of my control, my goal yearly is to do everything I can to keep those I care for safe, both physically and mentally.

That has even proved challenging, so when accomplished I feel good. Other people laugh, but any day I can say no one died is a good day.

In December 2018 I almost lost my partner to a car accident, so it’s been a rough year of recovery and balancing science and human-ness, physical health and mental health. She has pulled through spectacularly, but we had some touch and go moments right after the accident and then in her ongoing recovery.

Tiny human, well she’s a challenge to keep alive and functioning at her optimum level. We have all too often brushes with death with her…
