Pandemic And Food Allergies
Where is all the safe food?
COVID-19 crept up on us. We were preparing to move, so eating down our pantry and freezer stock. Then…then it got scary. For those of you who follow along with us, Kiddo has 14 food allergies. I almost always have a stocked pantry because of this.
COVID though, and the food shortages, and supply shortages caught us off guard. Like I said we were prepping to move, and who wants to move 5–6 giant boxes of food? Not me that’s for sure. In the end, that is what ended up happening.
While the general population got a taste of food scarcity in all this, we experienced a different type of panic. We could find food, but not SAFE food. When food can be an enemy, it is even more scary to have empty shelves. We only trust certain brands, we can only eat certain things. On top of the allergies Kiddo is a kid, and therefore picky. They have texture aversions due to Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) which makes it even harder.
Kiddo is immune compromised, so we masked up, armed with sanitizer and hands in pockets, and scoured shelves for safe food, that they don’t hate. We bought 4 jars of SunButter, we ordered groceries from our online bulk supplier who warned of shipping delays and out of stock items. We scoured the shelves of Sams to find the rice Kiddo prefers.
